joel lewis
i was knocking about Silliman’s blog and read his August 18th piece on Joel Lewis. A great find. I’ve shelved the one book my library has of his, I’m sure, but haven’t read him. A quick google search turned up this gem:

well, thanks Ron, a new poet to read. I haven’t been so nuts about a poet in a long time.
Jon, I’ve actually communicated with Joel Lewis regarding Hamilton; Lewis published him in an anthology some years back. And you know the lady I was telling you about, now researching Hamilton? Lewis is her professor and instigated her interest in Hamilton!
He’s absolutely amazing. I can’t believe I haven’t read him before. The new Jersey business could be annoying, but it’s not. I assume Alfred Starr Hamilton falls under the category of New Jersey treasures…mad men living in rooming houses with shitty jobs writing poetry…Lewis’s poems are a little like Ben Kachor’s ‘Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer’. In what way did you communticate with him? Out for a drink, e-mail, what? I will one of these days post a poem or two and some Julius Knipl stuff…I think he blows the various typists I read away.
Email. I wrote him to ask about Hamilton and he mentioned he’d communicated with the man, found him very courteous and humble, not very self-promoting. In his email he was very helpful and polite; seemed a real down to earth cool fellow. I thanked him for his time and never wrote again. Years later a student writes me out of the blue and has gone wild on the Hamilton research. I should put you in contact with her. Her findings have been pretty remarkable. She’s found Hamilton letters from the 1950’s!
Post some of his stuff, and Kachor too while yer at it….
